Visiting Volunteers

Visiting Volunteers do make a difference! They provide valuable support for individuals and their families and more importantly, bring a little humanity to the client's world. Volunteers are involved in this program because they care.

Volunteers visit clients in their homes, offering companionship and practical support as well as short-term relief for their caregivers. Our volunteers are there to listen without judgment and with compassion and offer practical help with day-to-day needs such as shopping, appointments and outings.

Each applicant is individually assessed by our Director of Client Services and matched with an appropriate Volunteer who works with our professional staff to ensure the clients and their families receive the highest quality care.

Anyone living with a life-threatening illness, for which the primary treatment goal is quality of life, is eligible for our Visiting Volunteer Program.

Time: based on individual needs

  Oasis Day Program

Imagine a quiet place you can visit each week, removed from your routine and a refuge from the world. Just as the program name suggests, Oasis is a place to relax and be refreshed.

Becoming involved with Oasis is as simple as calling to arrange an assessment by one of our professional staff. As with all programs, Oasis is free of charge and open to anyone with a life-threatening illness who is mobile, cognitive and responsible for his or her own personal care needs and medication. The house is walker and wheelchair friendly and should transportation be needed, volunteer drivers can be arranged.

Clients meet weekly at the Doane House in Newmarket with other clients, a professional staff and trained volunteers. The recently restored historic Doane House provides a warm and friendly atmosphere where participants in the Oasis Program can enjoy activities, refreshments and the company of each other.

All activities are individualized to the interests of the participants and might include massage therapy, reflexology, Yoga, speakers, card games, painting, and a host of other programs should they be desired by the clients. Sometimes the clients prefer to sit quietly or chat with their friends or our volunteers.

Come and join us for coffee and refreshments!

Time: Thursday and Friday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Registration required: yes

Bereavement Program

This program provides individual and group support in a safe and reliable environment for family members or friends who are trying to cope with the illness or loss of a loved one.

The staff and trained volunteers in the Bereavement Program help individuals deal with grief that often manifests itself as sadness, guilt, frustration and anger. Working with these individuals either alone or in a group, clients can share feelings of loss or share the understanding, communication and healing process with family members.

The Bereavement Program offers a variety of formats, including:

  • Individual Bereavement Support: One-on-one counselling is available onsite for bereaved clients and caregivers.
  • Day Time Bereavement Support Group: Available onsite at various times throughout the year.
  • Night Time Bereavement Support Group: Available onsite at various times throughout the year.
  • In-home Visiting Bereavement Support: Available for clients who are unable to access Doane House Hospice onsite location.
  • Young Adult Bereavement Support Group: Available onsite at various times of the year.
  • Secondary School Visiting Bereavement Support Program: Trained volunteers are available to facilitate teen bereavement support groups at local high schools during the school year. In-school bereavement counselling for individual students is also available upon request.
  • Caregiver Support Group: Is an ongoing support program with sessions every first and third Wednesday of the month.
  • Walk and Talk: Is an ongoing bereavement support program. Clients and volunteers meet every Wednesday at Fairy Lake in Newmarket for a therapeutic walking session.
  • Volunteer Sharing Circle: For Doane House Hospice volunteers who work directly with hospice clients. Meetings take place every 4-6 weeks.
  • ALS Support Group: Is an ongoing support program for individuals and family that have been affected by ALS. Sessions run every second Wednesday of the month.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a different approach to traditional talk therapy, where participants can use the art process to express thoughts and feelings they may not know how to otherwise express.

Many of our clients in this program are children who are trying to cope with the devastating loss of a parent, sibling or other close family member such as a grandparent.

A professionally trained Art Therapist works with participants in sessions that are typically 1 hour in length. The length of the program is adaptable to the needs of the individual or group.

Time: by appointment
Registration required: yes

Caregiver Support

In our community, many individuals are providing care and support for a relative or friend yet the needs of the caregivers are often overlooked, even by the caregivers themselves.

The Caregiver Support Program promotes open discussions on the frustrations that accompany care giving, but more importantly, the opportunity to identify skills and activities caregivers can develop to improve their level of support and strategies to manage stress in order to prevent 'burnout'.

Participation is by registration and the Caregiver Support Group meets for one hour twice a month to explore common experiences in being the primary caregiver. Support is available from experienced facilitators, staff and other community resources.

Time: First and Third Wednesday of the Month, 2:30 - 3:30 pm
Registration required: yes
