Hope and Healing Through Connection

DHH is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life through the provision of non-medical support for those affected by or caring for an individual with a life-threatening illness, as well as bereavement support.

The club provides free art-making activities designed to help children safely express their feelings, learn healthy ways to cope with grief, and experience the power of peer support.

Each session spotlights a particular art material and participants are encouraged to experiment and customize their creations. Facilitation is provided by Art Therapist Cynthia Gardner, and Recreation Therapist, Casey Pfenning. Both are certified, with expertise and experience in providing grief and bereavement therapy for children.

To participate, Mariposa Club participants must be

  • An elementary student in York Region
  • Between the ages of 7 and 14 and able to participate in a group setting
  • Experiencing grief for a loved one who has died, or for someone with a life-limiting illness

All Mariposa Art Club events take place on PA Days from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Doane House Hospice, 17100 Yonge Street, Newmarket.
Light snacks are provided.

To register, please contact Art Therapist Cynthia Gardner at cgardner@myhospice.ca

Art Therapy Program

Art Therapy is a different approach to traditional talk therapy, where participants can use the art process to express thoughts and feelings they may not know how to otherwise express.
